Had the Black Cherry Sherbet. Mmmmmmm. Good!
Next stop Stratford Hall. Lee’s birthplace
I had driven from Tupelo all day to this spot on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains and it looked like the perfect location to capture a sunset. The sky was a bit a hazy and I was an hour or so early so I sat and waited. Then I put the iPhone to work.
The same storm that struck Birmingham. Cannot really imagine what
Joplin, MO looks like today.
Incredible damage in western Birmingham on 27 April. Have never seen
anything like this. What amounts to several city blocks flattened. A
service station that is nothing but a concrete slab and pumps. And
people still standing there looking. In shock.
They’re big on The King ’round here
Four-hundred forty miles of Parkway that until an hour ago I did not know existed. I vaguely recalled the Trace from school history lessons but did not realize it had been memorialized by the Park Service. This is a beautiful run comparable in most respects to The Blue Ridge Parkway. I think I will combine them on my trip to California in June. Would also make a nice fall foliage run: Waynesboro to Asheville then Nashville to Natchez. Wow!
I’m at the Visitor’s Center near Tupelo, MS, which is about the north-south mid-point. It’s nearly 1700 so I’m thinking Tupelo might be home tonight. Should I leave one if my “Richard slept here” cards? Hmmmm.
An experience
Just sat out a hellish storm here
Thought I’d make Harrison, AR tonight but there’s just too much along the way. Pulling out of Natchitoches aiming for The Ozarks. We’ll see.
Who knew that America’s #1 Fitness and Weight Loss Center was hidden
here in Leesville, LA? Awesome!
Sitting in the welcome center listening to the flood news. Not sure when or if I’ll come in contact. There is such a dichotomy between what’s happening and what the surrounding weather right now actually is.
Traveling along the MS Gulf Coast. It’s going to take a while to get through here I think:) Nothing but pale blue vistas as far as the eye can see.
Room with a view
Loneliness is the first thing that God’s eye nam’d not good.
