Survived the Lower Gauley -celebrations at The Red Dog

Some new gear for The Trip finally arrived today. So far I’m tent-less
but except for this weekend in WV that shouldn’t be a problem. That
tent will be here before departure day. In the meantime I got one of
those red-tipped wonders to while away the hours with. And this thing
is Wide! Yes!!!!!

T – Minus 6

I have been using a sleeping bag (on those rare occasions I need one) that I inherited from Charles several years ago. It’s big, blue, bulky and seems to be made mostly from cotton and flannel or something. A nice red plaid lining.

Old_bag

I used it on a visit with friends in Port Jervis, NY this past early spring when it was stil cold there. Noticed it wasn’t all that warm. But otherwise I’ve never given much thought to the things. What’s to be said about them anyway? They’re big enough. They have a zipper that doesn’t get stuck. Well padded. Pleasing color maybe.

Whoa! Little did I know – literally 🙂

Charles let me know that the bag I was using would not really work for The Trip – I’d probably freeze to death – and sent a recommendation for an upgrade. That enticed me to look around a bit to see if I couldn’t become a more informed buyer. It’s like stepping off the side of a cliff into a bottomless pit to see how far you can fall.

Lotsa bags out there!

Charles’ recommendation turned out to be solid – why would I doubt that? – but I decided I wanted a bag with a hood and the one he pointed me to didn’t have one. I also wanted a roomy pouch and not a slender mummy style. I wound up buying a Big Agnes Silver Creek +30 bag. It’s large and has a pouch on the underside to slip the sleepng pad into. It’s a “sleeping system” 🙂

I was hoping to test all this out this weekend on a two trip to WV’s New River Gorge for a rafting event. But my bag might not arrive in time. REI shipped it FedEx Smart Post. It made it from PA to Reston in two days but then they dropped it at the local post office for final delivery and advised me it might take a couple or three days more before I actually receive it. I’m leaving Saturday morning, so I really need it on Friday. There also seems to be some questin about when the new tent that Charles bought me as a late birthday gift will arrive, but that’s another blog. I may wind up on the ground with a sheet the way things are going. Will be all prepared for delivery to the local morgue.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

What’s the penalty for breaking into a PO to get your goods?

Stuff

The Trip is coming up. Too many things to do. Get a house-sitter. Eat all the perishables in the fridge. Cancel this service and that. Get the taxes paid (Yes, I’m one of those.) And check and double check the lists. The big one is the kit list that Chaz sent my way. He being the Pro cCamper; me being the neophyte. Yesterday I ventured out to fill in some of the gaps.

I dropped by Costco first to see if perhaps they might have one of my list items at a lower price. No such luck, but as I walked out the door I marveled that it was the first and only time I had ever visited Costco and not spent a single solitary dime, much less the $300 that was the norm. I figured this was a good omen and headed to REI.  I kept repeating to myself as I entered the store: “Stick to the list. Stick to the list.” Needless to say.

REI is like a specialized Costco – and just as dangerous to one’s bank account. I think I did ok though; only wandered off the path a couple of times and I did avoid all the bargains on the clearance racks since they were not listed. Some things became irresitable though, like the Eat Well – Go Far Beef Enchilada Meal in a bag. Add hot water and stir. No cooking – except the water. Of course I had to have something to heat the water in: Jet Boil. And if you’re going to have hot water why not hot coffee; Jet Boil Coffee Press. Cooking attracts bugs: Ben’s Bug Spray. Bugs make noise: ear plugs.  Get away from it all – need light: Black Diamond LED lantern. And so on. I was lucky to escape, but having said that I have to go back today to get a sleeping pad and a head lamp. They were both on the list but somehow got overlooked. Someone posted a video this morning on age-activated attention disorder. That might have been it. Anyway, I have to go back.  And as I walk in the door I will repeat my mantra: Stick to the list. Stick to the list.

State Theater

7d_10096

I have been meaning to shoot The State for some time now and this morning I found myself in Falls Church with both my camera bag and some spare time. So.

When I was teenager I used to attend an occasional movie at The State. It was some ways from the town I lived in – by teenage standards anyway – and so going there was much an adventure. Sometimes we’d run into friends; sometimes into fists, but it was always fun and generated more than a few legends, all of of which now escape me (keep journals kids!).

Today The State serves as a live performance arena for retro, indie and niche acts. The latter include a lot of blues players. It’s a small venue but you’d be amazed at some of the names that turn up. The one that pops for me on the marquee in these shots is Jimmy Thackery.

7d_10071

I’ll go back at some point and get some night shots. This was another outing with my EF 50mm f1.4 USM. I think I’m getting used to it; I suppose you’ll have to be the judge of that – as always.

More Occoquan

Photo1

Had to drive to Lorton this morning to have an orthopod check out my
knee. The good news: no surgery required. In fact it appears some
anti-inflamatories and a lot of X-Stretch  do the trick.

I took the camera bag along and intended visiting The Workhouse Arts
Center. Typically, too many shiny objects got in the way. I'll put
some on here later but most will go to Facebook, Flickr and Google+.

Got some good shots I think. It was a 50mm day. Mostly at f4.0. Trying
to decide if the next lens needs to be f4.0 or f2.8. Sampling. This
shot of course came from the iPhone.

Couple hundred shots walking around Occoquan today. These were some of my favorites.

The thing I like about working from home? On hot days I can do it naked. Now how many cubicle commandos can say that?

The Oracle

Photo1

The Oracle Building in Reston replaced a nice stand of trees about a
decade ago. I didn’t care for that. I thought trees much more
valuable. But unlike some communities, Reston has a good growth plan.
It has made room for trees and commerce to coexist and prosper. In the
Fall the smell of leaf mold is palpable. And the people who work at
Oracle get to enjoy that along with the rest of us.

A Centenarian’s Lament

“57 friends posted on your Wall”

P1080776

I no longer set wake-up alarms. They are for people who have deadlines to meet. Early-morning meetings to attend. Hot topics to cogitate over. Gossip to regurgitate. People to talk to about places they need to be to capture things they probably have no great need for but are driven to pursue. Worker bees workers be.

Not me. I have no reason for those bells and buzzers to be set to go off in – what I now consider to be – the middle of the night to disturb my sleep or put the bum’s rush to my morning coffee. My daily commute is about 30 seconds and my schedule is any damned thing I want it to be and I get to decide that on the fly. I still work for a living, I just do it on my time.

So I was a surprised this morning to be awakened by the constant chirp of my trusty iPhone. It sits beside my bed in one of those charger – speaker things I picked up at Brookstone and is automatically assigned to vibrate in response to an incoming signal. I don’t bother to shut it off entirely since the sound the vibration mode makes barely registers with my ears.

Unless.

P1080783

Unless it’s almost constant. Then even my Huey-damaged hearing will pick it up. So this morning it’s near constant, interrupting a rare dream about something very pleasant that, quite naturally, I can’t remember. Just the buzz!  Bbbbzzzzz!  Bbbbbuuuzzzzzzzzz!  Sounds like gnats begging to be murdered. What the…….!

The noise was not coming from incoming calls, it was generated from incoming text messages.

I don’t use the phone a lot for voice communication and, I note, a recent poll indicates that only about a quarter of all cell phone owners do. We would seem an odd lot compared to our ancestors, or for that matter even compared to ourselves as little as five years ago. Way back then we struggled with the idea of integrating data with a device that God and Mr Bell had so obviously intended to be used only to extend the range of the human voice. But that was then. Times change.

Now God and Mr Bell have gotten themselves – thanks to Mr Jobs mostly but with a slight tip of the hat to those folk at RIM as they slowly fade into the past – smartphones.

Not to compare myself in any way to this esteemed crowd, but I got one too. And among other channels, it’s tied into Facebook. (Is there anything, other than perhaps your doctor’s office and the DMV* that isn’t?) And my Facebook account is tied into several hundred other peoples’ accounts and they were all notified this morning – when they awoke (chuckle, chuckle) to their alarms – that it’s my 101st birthday. And being at least etherlistically (is that a word? It should be) personable and sociable like all Facebookers are, they dropped by my Wall – yet another recent conceit – and left their good wishes.

And Facebook dutifully pushed all this down the line to my bedside table and interrupted this dream that I cannot remember, although I can pretty much guarantee you she had red hair. Thanks a lot Steve!

P1080780

Although there are times when I am visiting my friends in Florida that I might question it, it’s not everyday that one gets to celebrate their 101st birthday. Aren’t we lucky! So even though my first appointment today was not until 1230 – The weekly Spook Lunch over at the Silver Diner – it was impossible for me to get too disturbed about this otherwise early-morning annoyance. OK. Let me be truthful: I relished it. Almost as good as having someone bring me coffee in bed and then hanging around to help me with it.

Almost.

Ticker Update: “90 friends posted on your Wall.”

I’ll have to also admit that the marketing guy in me looked at these figures and started doing some calculations. About 600 Facebook friends on my personal page; another 600 odd (no pun intended) connections through my fan page and various groups; past 90 hits on this birthday thing; better than a 9% return so far – probably will increase; direct marketing is excellent at a rate of 2% or higher. Hey!  This ain’t all that bad!

Groupon just interrupted my train of thought to let me know I could get 50% off a car wash and oil change at Arbor, which is also a good deal. But then I remembered I had it set to send me notices from Austin, TX where my favorite daughter lives and thrives, on among other things, daily deal surprises.

Sometimes marketing is best set aside. This, AnnaSummer, be one of those times.

Thank you each and everyone for your sentiments! In this world it’s always good to know that you’re crossing someone else’s mind at least occasionally. That you’re not alone. That people care about you personally and might even miss you for a few fleeting seconds if you weren’t around.

Better than that is knowing that I have people out there  – other human beings – that I am privileged to care about too.  As my friend and Ruth’s, Brian Buffini, is wont to say, “It’s A Good Life!”

Having said that, if I am around this time next year I will have to remember to turn off the phone

*DMV – For my off-shore friends this stands for Division of Motor Vehicles. The DMV is that local government organization that among other things issues our license to drive an automobile or other such destructive vehicle. It’s the place that all Americans go when they have an overwhelming desire to be ignored. I suppose it might also stand for Don’t Mind (me, I’m only) Visiting.

Ruth

I love this picture of Ruth. I always have and I always will.

I took it.

She was fifty-three. Four years later she wasn’t.

Along Benaja Road in North Carolina

I travel the road between Reston and Greensboro all too often these days.  But I have begun to pick out places along the way that I think might make good shots. it’s a great pass-time and also very instructive. Ibegin to see how the same frame will look much different at different times of the day with the variance that occurs in lighting.

Img_5545

This one, an abandoned service station, be one of those places. It’s located near the intersection of Rt 29 and Benaja Road, just north of Reidsville, NC.

It’s on the northbound side of the highway and I always seem to overshoot it on the way home. Today I had it on my mind as I was arriving in Greensboro for the weekend of meetings. I had some spare time so I made a U-turn and went back.
